About us

The New Zealand Pacific Union Conference (NZPUC) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is seeking a capable, detail-oriented, and mission-minded individual to join our Treasury team as a full-time Assistant Accountant based in Howick, Auckland.

NZPUC serves as the regional administrative office of the Seventh-day Adventist Church across New Zealand, the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis & Futuna, and Pitcairn Island. This role offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to an organisation dedicated to supporting ministry, mission, and service throughout the Pacific region.

About the Role

The Assistant Accountant plays an important role in supporting the financial operations of NZPUC by ensuring accurate, timely, and reliable accounting processes across the organisation and the various entities for which we provide financial support and services.

We operate a centralised accounting function, providing the successful candidate with exposure to a diverse range of entities, ministries, and operational activities. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop broad accounting experience while contributing to the mission and work of the Church throughout the Pacific.

This position would suit either an experienced Assistant Accountant or a recent accounting graduate looking to further develop their skills in a supportive, mission-focused environment.

Eligibility to Work in New Zealand

Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand at the time of application. This includes New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, or holders of a valid work visa permitting full-time employment. Evidence of work rights will be required as part of the recruitment process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing and reconciling bank accounts
  • Preparing monthly reconciliations of debtor, creditor, and other balance sheet accounts

  • Processing creditor payments and following up on outstanding debtor accounts

  • Processing staff monthly accounts and expense reports

  • Reconciling reserves and allocated equity accounts

  • Reviewing journals, receipts, and accounting transactions for accuracy and completeness

  • Preparing financial documentation for filing and audit purposes

  • Processing monthly standing journals, including depreciation and appropriation allocations

  • Supporting and overseeing accurate ledger data entry

  • Processing monthly Tithes and Offerings reports

  • Assisting with the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements

  • Providing support to the Associate CFO and CFO as required

  • Assisting with other finance and treasury duties as needed

Desirable Criteria

We are looking for someone who is organised, proactive, collaborative, a team player, and committed to high standards of accuracy and professionalism.

The successful applicant will ideally have:

  • A New Zealand-recognised qualification in Accounting, Business, or a related field

  • Previous accounting or finance experience

  • A desire to work towards membership of a professional accounting body

  • Strong computer literacy and confidence using financial systems

  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively within a team environment

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Initiative and a willingness to identify improvements and efficiencies within treasury processes

  • A willingness to work as part of a Christian faith-based organisation and support the mission and values of the Church

Experience in the Following Systems Would Be Advantageous

  • Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel

  • CaseWare

  • MYOB Acumatica Accounting System and associated reporting tools

  • MYOB Acumatica Payroll

  • UDS for Education Reporting

  • Xero Accounting

  • Adobe Acrobat and related products
