Chief Financial and Operations Officer

Avondale University is seeking applications from leaders experienced in the areas of finance and operations for the role of Chief Financial and Operations Officer on a 5 year contract.

In this critical role you will be responsible for managing the financial and infrastructure operations of Avondale. You will partner with Avondale’s Vice-Chancellor and Avondale University Council in driving innovative and sound business operations in harmony with Avondale’s strategic plan.

What will you do?

Some of the main functions will include:

  • Oversee the timely preparation of the annual budget, and annual and monthly financial statements and operating reports.
  • Provide senior Avondale personnel with financial information necessary for decision making (e.g. fees, repairs, and need for new buildings).
  • Liaise with the Provost regarding the financing of the academic program.
  • Liaise with the Provost regarding the financing of the Quality Management program.
  • Supervise the receipt, safekeeping and dispersal of Avondale funds.
  • Liaise with government departments regarding receipt of government financial assistance for students and grants to Avondale.
  • Liaise with South Pacific Division treasury regarding matters relating to Avondale’s funding and finance.
  • Ensure adequate insurance in relation to Avondale’s assets and activities (including buildings, equipment, public liability, etc).
  • Supervise the proper management and maintenance of the Avondale University Estate, property, buildings and facilities.
  • Assist the Vice Chancellor in the planning of new buildings and facilities as required.
  • Liaise with the administration of the Sydney Adventist Hospital concerning the financial aspects of the Joint Management Agreement with the Hospital for the operation of Avondale’s School of Nursing and Health.
  • Ensure the effective management of staff and departments for which the COO is directly responsible.

Essential criteria

  • Appropriate degree-level qualifications in accounting.
  • Extensive experience in accounting and financial management of similar sized organisations.
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively leading diverse teams and in managing staff.
  • Be a participating member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
  • Demonstrated ability to comfortably and effectively liaise with all levels of staff and management. and varying personalities and situations.
  • Understand and support equal opportunity principles.

Desirable criteria

  • Relevant post-graduate education.
