About Camp Somerset

Camp Somerset is an Outdoor Education and Recreation Facility owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Queensland. Situated on 1,000 acres of bushland and rainforest on Somerset Dam, it offers outdoor education, adventure recreation, school camps, church and community programs, expeditions and waterfront and bush camping.

About the role

This full-time Senior Program Coordinator position provides leadership of Camp Somerset’s Outdoor Programs Department and is responsible for the safe, effective and professional planning, coordination and delivery of centre-based and expedition programs.

The successful applicant will lead program coordinators, instructors and casual outdoor staff; oversee program scheduling, client program development, equipment and resources, risk management and compliance; and work closely with the Camp Manager as part of the site leadership team. While not required to be a practicing member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the successful applicant must share a commitment to the Church’s mission and support its ideals and beliefs. They must hold, or be eligible to obtain, a Positive Notice Blue Card for Child Related Employment.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the planning, scheduling and delivery of centre-based and expedition programs
  • Lead, supervise, mentor and develop Program Coordinators, instructors and casual staff
  • Liaise with schools, churches, community groups and prospective clients regarding program needs
  • Oversee activity risk assessments, SOPs, staff competencies, incident reporting and program documentation
  • Ensure compliance with WHS, child safety requirements, Camp Somerset policies and relevant Adventure Activity Standards
  • Oversee activity equipment, resources and operational readiness of activity areas
  • Contribute to quotations, costing proposals, permits and external agency approvals
  • Develop and improve outdoor education programs and support the promotion of Camp Somerset programs

Skills and Experience in the Outdoor Industry

  • Extensive current outdoor industry experience across both centre-based and expedition programs
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating outdoor programs and leading outdoor staff
  • Strong administration, scheduling, client service, communication and organisational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead safety and risk-management systems and develop staff competency
  • Experience with budgets, quotations, equipment systems, permits and program development is highly desirable

Qualifications

  • Minimum Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership, Outdoor Recreation, Outdoor Education or equivalent relevant qualification
  • Current Blue Card or eligible to obtain, First Aid and CPR
  • Current Australian Driver License
  • Relevant activity-specific qualifications and competencies for Camp Somerset programs, which may include high ropes, vertical rescue, paddling and mountain biking
  • Diploma or higher qualification in Outdoor Leadership/Education is highly desirable
