Vacancy Details

Ever wondered where a head for numbers could take you?

The North New South Wales Conference is opening its finance office to Year 10–12 students who want a genuine head start on a career in accounting. We are inviting expressions of interest from young people who are practising members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and would like to learn accounting and finance the way it is actually done — not from a textbook, but alongside qualified professionals managing the funds that keep our churches, schools and ministries running.

You will be trained on the job, with hours built around your school commitments: part-time during term, with the option of full-time work in the school holidays or once you have finished Year 12. It is paid, mentored, hands-on experience that most people do not get until well into a university degree — and for the right person, it is the first step on a supported pathway into further study and a long-term career in the Church’s finance teams.

If you are organised, careful with detail, and want work that counts for something bigger than a payslip, we would love to hear from you.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Bookkeeping and double-entry fundamentals
  • Accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Payroll basics and bank reconciliations
  • Month-end processes and financial reporting
  • Hands-on use of professional accounting software
  • Excel to a genuinely employable standard
  • Business communication — email, phone and people skills
  • Handling confidential information with discretion

WHERE IT CAN LEAD

  • One-on-one mentoring from a qualified accountant (CPA/CA) — a named supervisor, not just a desk
  • Possible School-Based Traineeship: a Certificate III or IV in Accounts Administration that counts toward your HSC
  • Potential support toward further study — a Diploma in Accounting while you work, or help with a degree
  • Priority consideration for ongoing finance roles with the Conference
  • Connections across the wider Adventist employment network — schools, ADRA, ACA Health, Sanitarium and other conferences
  • A Sabbath-friendly workplace, with hours that flex around school and exams

Essential Criteria

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Currently enrolled in Year 10, 11 or 12, with satisfactory academic standing (particularly Mathematics and English)
  • A practising member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, supportive of the mission and values of the Church
  • Sound computer skills — confident with Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Clear communication, both written and verbal
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and a willingness to ask questions
  • Reliability, punctuality and discretion with confidential information
  • A current driver’s licence or learner permit, or reliable transport to the office
  • Written parental or guardian consent and school support for applicants under 18
  • The right to work in Australia, and willingness to commit to a minimum of 12 months
  • Two referees — ideally a teacher and a pastor or church leader

Desirable Criteria

THINGS THAT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE

  • An interest in studying accounting, commerce or business after school

  • Some Excel experience

  • Experience handling money or records for a church, Pathfinder club, school group or small business
